| dc.description.abstract | The rapid increase in population and township had led to the increase newlinein the generation of solid waste among Indian cities. Solid waste dumping newlinein open areas pollutes the air, water and soil. Leachate, a liquid that emerges newlinefrom the dumped solid waste pollutes the groundwater and may take several newlinedecades for the contaminated groundwater to return to its natural state. newlineHence, leachate treatment before disposal is very important. In this newlineresearch, combined batch treatment processes: coagulation-flocculation, newlineelectro-coagulation and adsorption were conducted to reduce the Chemical newlineOxygen Demand (COD) concentration in the leachate generated from the newlinecompost pit. newlineIn the first phase of research work, the assessment of open dumping newlinesite at Malayadipudur in Sathyamangalam town, Erode district was carried newlineout. The fresh municipal solid waste (MSW) samples were collected, newlinesegregated and weighed individually for solid waste composition study. newlineFrom the sample analysis, it was observed that, about 90% of the total newlinewaste was combustible and remaining 10% was non-combustible. The newlinemoisture content of fresh MSW varied from 10.6% to 28.4%. The leachate newlinegenerated from the compost pit was collected and analysed. The newlineBiochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)5-20 °C and COD concentration of newline4650 mg/L and 7400 mg/L respectively observed in the fresh leachate newlinesample showed the presence of high organic content of wastes newline | |
