Abstract
The objectives of this work comprised so assess the outcome of Berberis aristata stembark Punica granatum leaves and seeds extract and their various fractions on glucocorticoid GIO and ovariectomy induced osteoporosis OVX in rats followed by the Polyherbal formulation PHF of extracts having potent anti-osteoporotic activity The effect were assessed by employing experimental models such as GIO and OVX in rats The common parameters determined were femur bone parameters BMD serum ALP TRAP OC Ca P urine Ca Cr P and femur bone ash contents The ethanolic extracts with potent antiosteoporotic activity were subjected for various solvents for fractionation by using Pet.ether chloroform and water to separate phytoconstituents The fractionated compounds were assessed for in vivo antiosteoporosis activity Apart from this an attempt was made to formulate a polyherbal formulation containing the ethanolic extracts of Berberis aristata stembark Punica granatum leaves and seeds at a ratio of equally and evaluate its antiosteoporotic activity using glucocorticoid and ovariectomy induced osteoporosis in rats
newlineThe ethanolic extracts exhibited a dose dependent significant antiosteoporotic effect and Pet ether water and chloroform fractions have possessed significant anti bone resorptive effect in the GIO and OVX in rats The PHF exhibited a substantial decrease in bone resorption as equated to that of normal group in GIO and OVX rats Based on the present findings we can conclude that the Berberis aristata stembark Punica granatum leaves and seeds possess potential anti osteoporotic effect
