Abstract
The combination of wireless communication infrastructure and portable computing
newlinedevices has laid the foundation for a new network computing paradigm, called mobile
newlinecomputing, which allows the users to access information and collaborate with others
newlinewhile on the move. This new freedom of computing on movement does not come without
newlinenew challenges. The mobile computing environment is constrained in many ways.
newlineFurthermore, connectivity is frequently lost for variant periods of time. The difficulties
newlineraised by the constraints are compounded by mobility that induces variability in the
newlineavailability of both the communication and the computational resources. To add, the
newlineservices required from such infrastructures become much more important when
newlinecomputing is expected from such a mobile environment.
newlineWireless mobile networks are typically characterized by the severe resource constraints,
newlinesuch as bandwidth, buffer and the battery power. By the rapid fluctuations in the
newlineavailability of these resources, it becomes difficult for the system to provide guaranteed
newlineQuality of Service (QoS) at levels required by many distributed and collaborative
newlineapplications. A proper management of the network resources can improve the
newlineperformance of the network infrastructure. There are several research articles identifying
newlinethe fundamental challenges in mobile computing.
newlineMobile computing is the discipline in which the emphasis is over computation that
newlineutilizes the available communication infrastructure. The limited frequency spectrum in
newlinesuch infrastructure is divided into a finite number of wireless channels. An efficient
newlineallocation of communication channels is critical for the performance of mobile cellular
newlinenetwork as the bandwidth allotted is limited. In this thesis, channel has been considered
newlineas one of the prime resources. The objective of channel allocation is to assign the
newlinerequired number of channels to the cell such that optimal frequency spectrum utilization
newlineis achieved and interference effects are minimized.
