A Study of Leadership Effectiveness of School Principals in public and private Secondary Schools

Abstract

An educational leader choose the style through which he/she perhaps to command or to manage or the co-ordinate effectively. These differential leadership styles are determined by the natural conditions suitable for them in the process of leadership. Therefore, it has been considered by the researcher that the present study will be of great value to discover the qualities as a leader of educational institutions (private and public secondary schools) in New Delhi. The researcher also examined the leadership effectiveness based on gender, school type, stream of education and experience as principal. Thus, the title of the present study was: A Study of the Leadership Effectiveness of School Principals inpublic and private Secondary Schools . In this study, the technique of stratified random sampling was used for dividing the state of Delhi into eight parts (administrative divisions). Simple random arrangement/technique (lottery method) has been used to categorize the proportionate number of schools.A total of 145 schools which included 64 public secondary schools and 81 private secondary schools from all the regions of Delhi. From each school 10 teachers were selected randomly to collect the data using the tool. The teachers gave the data about the 145 principals of the school which were selected as sample. Descriptive type of survey research was employed as the research method. The researcher used the standardized available scale, Leadership Effectiveness Scale - A measure of Leader s Characteristics (LES-TH) by Dr. Haseen Taj (2010). The school principals possessed high, average and low levels of leadership effectiveness. Gender showed effect on total leadership effectiveness and its components among male and female principals. In the total leadership effectiveness and its components, female principals showed higher levels than male principals. Stream of education showed effect on total leadership effectiveness and in the two components namely interpersonal relations and operations as citizen.
