Abstract

The Tamil country, located as the southern part of the peninsular newlineIndia, is known for its renowned and developed culture and literary newlineeminence all through the ages. The three Tamil Sangams (academies) which newlinefunctioned between 300 B.C. and 300 A.D. promoted the Tamil language newlinethrough its venerable literary pieces. In the subsequent period i.e., from the newlinesixth to the tenth A.D. the twelve Vaishnava Alwars and 63 Saiva newlineNayanmars adorned Tamil by their devotional works called Nalayira Divya newlinePrabandam, complied by Nathamuni and the Devaram hymns and newlineThiruvasagam compiled by Nambiyandar Nambi. They were known as newlineBhakthi or devotional literature. During the subsequent Pallava, Chola, newlinePandya and Chera periods too the Tamil country and Tamil witnessed newlinemultifaceted and multidimensional developments. When the Nayaks newlineestablished their rules at places like Ikkeri, Senchi, Tanjore and Madurai the newlineTamil movement was prominent. The arrival of numerous poets too helped newlinethe development of Tamil. newline
