Specific Determinants of Hygiene and Motivation

Abstract

Contractual Teachers are those who do not enjoy privileges as enjoyed by core teachers of the Institution. They do not enjoy security in terms of career, a full array of benefits like research and other allowance and job security.. There is no defined salary scale for these teachers and the colleges offer them any amount they wish. A teacher serving on temporary norms, whose service might terminate after 2 years might receive Rs. 8000 per month, while a full time College hired Contractual teacher gets the highest amount of Rs.27,000 take home, while as per the 7th Pay Commission as recognized by the Government of India, the Gross Amount payable to an Assistant Professor is Rs.21,535,500 annually .(Sources: Data from Scottish Church College Teachers Forum). However, not even the sixth pay commission has been properly implemented in West Bengal, and only in pockets like Universities, the teaching professors are drawing this amount. newlineThe criteria for recruitment, selection and retention as stated by almost 100% of the teachers surveyed by the humble presenter, stated with affirmation that the same HR policies exist for both Core and Contractual Teachers. It was further observed by the present researcher that in the Government aided Colleges in Calcutta the subjects the contractual teachers teach , such as Business Administration, Microbiology, Media Studies, Post Graduate Studies in Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Computer Science ,among others,does not form a part of the State College Service Commission subjects. newlineIt was observed that if a Government aided college runs its own PG Stream, it hires Contractual Staff to support its core teachers. newline
