Development and Characterization of Magnesium Based Surface Composites Fabricated By Friction Stir Processing

Abstract

newlineMg and its alloys find vast applications in the electronics gadgets, automobile, and aero transport industry because of their properties like the best ratio of their stiffness to weight, better castability, and decent damping capacity in addition to the ease of recyclability. Mg has also found a place in human treatments as it easily gets dissolved in the human body in the due course of time required for the treatment. Mg alloys are extensively used for automobile apparatuses such as cam covers, baffles, oil adaptors, clutch housings, and roof frame assemblies. However, the opportunity is limited in the powertrain uses like automatic transmission casings and engine blocks due to the degradation of their mechanical behaviour at increased temperatures. Due to inferior mechanical properties such as hardness, the tribological performance of Mg and its alloys is not adequate also for such applications. Pure Mg is non-toxic to the human body and hence, finds wide applications in vitro uses. Sometimes it gets dissolved before the requisite time that is necessary for the treatment and hence finds its scope limited.
