Studies on Organic solvent tolerant esterase From lysinibacillus sphaericus

Abstract

newlineEsterases are enzymes that hydrolyze carboxylate newlineesters and are widespread in animals plants and microbes Carboxylesterases newlineare defined as enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of acylglycerols with newlineshort chains 10 carbon atoms while lipases are those that catalyse the newlinehydrolysis of acylglycerols with these two groups of enzymes exhibit activity in organic solvents and so they find use in organic synthesis and industrial processes Esterases were successfully used in transesterification reactions which include resolution of racemic mixtures newlineenantio and regio selective hydrolysis as well as in the synthesis of drugs newlinedetergents polymers and additives of industrial relevance newlineCatalytic activity can be enhanced greatly by using enzymes in newlineorganic solvents instead of aqueous media In organic solvents enzymes can newlinecatalyse reactions that are impossible in water become more stable and newlineexhibit new behaviour newline
