A Sociolinguistic Analysis of the Selected Cinematic Adaptation of Literary Works in Indian Setting

Abstract

The present study explores the area of sociolinguistics and film studies, considering four literary pieces. The literature selected is set in different periods, reflecting the social and political background. The smithereens in the literature selected for socio-linguistics study are as follows: newlineThe Guide (1958)- R. K. Narayan newlineTrain to Pakistan (1956)- Khushwant Singh newlineFive Points Someone (2004)- Chetan Bhagat newlineThe Jungle Book (1894)- Rudyard Kipling newlineThe films, which are an adaptation of the sources, are considered for the study. The chronology of the works is based on the film adaptation. newlineGuide, a film directed by the duo Vijay Anand and Tad Danielewski in Hindi and English versions, was released in the year 1965. The movie is adaptation of novel by R. K. Narayan published in the year 1958. The novel was one of the best seller books and the movie too was well- received due to capable cast like Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman and a strong plot. The basic difference in both the forms is of setting which was criticized by many people including the author of the book. newlineThe movie named Train to Pakistan was released in the year 1998 almost forty-two years after the Khushwant Singh s classic Train to Pakistan. newline3 idiots is the loose adaptation of Chetan Bhagat s Five Point Someone. The novel was published in 2004 whereas its adaptation in the year 2009 was well-received by the audience. The Jungle Book has been adapted several times and it has been recently adapted in the year 2016. This literary work had ruled the minds of readers for more than a century.
