Nanocavities within organized assemblies of biologically relevant amphiphiles spectroscopic probing and some applications

Abstract

Under certain special circumstances, surfactant molecules self-organize to create some organized assemblies. Due to their intriguing self-assembling behaviour and distinctive features, these assemblies have gained the attention of scientists for many years. Micelles, reverse micelles and vesicles are the most frequently occurring and thoroughly investigated organized assemblies.1-8 Vesicular systems such as liposomes and niosomes are popular organized assemblies used in drug delivery.9,10 However, liposomes and niosomes get disrupted in the harsh environment of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). In this context, the drug delivery community has reported the superior performance of vesicles containing bile salts i.e. bilosomes.11 The enhanced stability of bilosomes in the GIT environment arises due to the repulsion between bile salts present in the bilosomal bilayer and the bile salts present in situ in the GIT. 12,13 Vesicles containing bile salts (called bilosomes) have been used to increase the oral bioavailability of many drugs and macromolecules.14-18 The potential of bilosomes in successful drug delivery has been demonstrated in earlier studies. newline
