Biological Significance of Polyherbal Formulations for Anticancer Activity

Abstract

newlineThe antiproliferative activities from the methanolic extracts of Solanum indicum, Rhus succedanea, Rheum emodi and Gardenia gummifera were determined in cancer cell lines: human non-small cell lung carcinoma (H1975), prostate carcinoma (PC-3and DU145), colorectal carcinoma (HCT116) and malignant melanoma (A375). The in vitro antiproliferative assay revealed that S. indicum, R. succedanea, R. emodi and G. gummifera extracts exhibited inhibition with IC50 of 8.48 µg/ml, 24.5 µg/ml, 28.24 µg/ml and 28.61µg/ml respectively in DU145 cells, IC50 of 11.18 µg/ml, 11.04 µg/ml, 11.05 µg/ml and 23.03 µg/ml respectively in PC-3 cells. The extracts exhibited cytotoxicity in H1975 cells with IC50 of 9.03 µg/ml, 7.71 µg/ml, 15.95 µg/ml and 11.71 µg/ml respectively. Similarly, all the extracts showed cytotoxicity with IC50 of 17.58 µg/ml, 8.87 µg/ml, 19.31 µg/ml and 11.67 µg/ml respectively in HCT116 cells. The extracts also exhibited cytotoxicity in A375 cells with IC50 27.94 µg/ml, 13.13 µg/ml, 11.05 µg/ml and 7.816 µg/ml respectively. Results reveal that methanolic extracts of S. indicum, R. succedanea, R. emodi, and G. gummifera showed profound cytotoxicity to cancer cells and lower toxicity to normal cells. The extracts have potential for development of herbal formulations as an alternative to chemotherapeutic drugs. newline newlineCancer metastasis is refractory to most forms of chemotherapy. newlineConventional and alternative treatment/herbal remedies have been newlinedeveloped to target metastatic cancer cells in Asian countries.
