Abstract
The Internet of Things (IoT) stands as a revolutionary innovation, transforming the conventional understanding of the internet, creating an interconnected network of devices capable of sensing their surroundings and interacting with the physical environment. As IoT networks predominantly rely on wireless communication, there is a pressing need for scalable and energy-efficient technologies to accommodate the exponential growth of interconnected devices. The dominant connectivity paradigm for IoT networks revolves around wireless technologies, encompassing cellular networks, Wi-Fi, low-power multi-hop wireless networks (Zigbee and Bluetooth), and the emerging Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN). LPWAN solutions provide cost-effective wireless connectivity for an extensive range of low-power devices that are dispersed over expansive areas. In the realm of dense IoT applications, LPWAN technologies have gained significant popularity as a wireless communication solution. However, a substantial challenge in contemporary highly dynamic and densely populated wireless networks lies in effectively accommodating the growing multitude of resource-constrained IoT devices.
newlineIn this dissertation, we focus on Long Range (LoRa), one of the most captivating LPWAN technologies. LoRa, a proprietary LPWAN technology, was crafted by Semtech Corporation. To facilitate the widespread implementation of extensive LoRa networks with an emphasis on compatibility, the LoRa Alliance, a non-profit organization, developed an open standard Medium Access Control (MAC) layer protocol known as LoRaWAN. The LoRa protocol was developed specifically for LPWAN, which offer long-distance communication, low-power consumption, and simultaneous transmissions. The flexibility of the LoRa protocol to give trade-offs between battery consumption, communication range, and data throughput enables it to facilitate the development of a sustainable IoT.
