Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to investigate the personality antecedents i.e., elemental, compound, and situational traits; and consequences of surface traits. For this purpose, four objectives were formulated. Owing to the 3M model, the surface traits were conceptualized as materialism, consumer insecurity, and consumer loneliness. The elemental traits were conceptualized as extroversion, openness, agreeableness, neuroticism, and conscientiousness. The compound traits were conceptualized as need for conformity, and need for uniqueness, whereas the situational traits were conceptualized as self-esteem, and familialism. Owing to the quotfour perspectives to materialism matrix the consequences were conceptualized as environmental concern, charitable behaviour, and subjective well-being. Data were collected from a total of 447 respondents from 5 cities of India through a structured questionnaire. The sampling technique applied was mall intercept, and random sampling. Data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling performed on IBM SPSS version 23, and IBM AMOS version23. The results indicated that the structural model of the study reported satisfactory goodness of fit measures. Majority of the propositions of the current study were accepted. Researchers and marketers are advised to use these findings in order to further the study of these concepts and engage in more responsible behaviour.
