Study on the Characteristics of Water Leachate and Microbial Activity in Semi Urban Solid Waste Dumpsite

Abstract

The study area were selected based on the existing issues raised by the newlinepublic, and also it was observed that there is no proper geo-synthetic clay liner laid newlinebefore starting up the dumping process in the location, the reason is, it was started as newlineminimal disposing along the bund of the lake by the nearby residents and slowly it newlinewas extended by the municipality. Subsequently the quantity increased as the newlinegeneration of solid waste increases due to settlement. newlinePallavaram formerly known as Pallavapuram located in the suburbs of newlineChennai is one of the oldest inhabited places in Southern India. Many archaeological newlinediscoveries from this area date back to the Paleolithic age. The main reason for the newlinewater body hanging a threat is dumping of garbage for nearly two decades. The lake newlinehas shrunk to just about 150acres from 200 acres. newlineThe subsurface water sampling points have been identified based on the newlineshallow water table sources with minimum depth 10m to 20m. Similarly, the low newlinelying spots in the lake for surface water sampling identified and marked to repeat for newlinesampling during successive periods. The leachate sampling points and soil sampling newlinepoints were identified based on the suitability of depressed locations within the site newlineas well as on the periphery of the site newline
