Abstract
The research work presented in this thesis aims to develop the method/portable device for testing of non-metallic structures in safe and non-destructive manner. The non-metallic structure (referred as structure in the thesis) under test comprises of the component materials as cement concrete, soil, and lime. While the structures under test are referring to sculptures, monuments, and buildings. These structures require timely inspections and maintenance as they either get damaged during the handling maintenance or they get aged over time. The amount of damage is a function of variations in composition of the materials for structures at the time of the construction. This thesis proposes the radio frequency (RF) based method and portable device to quantify the composition of the material used for structure. Since, the component of the structures under test in this thesis are cement concrete and lime and has the dielectric characteristics. These dielectric Properties affects by the interaction of electric and magnetic fields at microwave frequencies of radio waves. The microwave frequencies are 1 GHz to 30 GHz. The higher the frequency for operations, the lesser is the depth of scanning for the structures. Further, it is essential to ensure that the testing doesn t cause further ionize the structures and catalyse the damage. Hence, the frequency chosen for the operation in this thesis limits to range of 1 GHz to 9 GHz. Furthermore, dielectric property can be characterized by the two electromagnetic properties: the electric permittivity and magnetic permeability. However, these materials are non-magnetic and yield permeability of free space.
