Abstract
Broadcast nature of the wireless medium makes a Wireless Sensor
newlineNetwork WSN prone to node compromise attacks where malicious users
newlineinvolve actions to gain control on the network Devising security solutions to
newlinesuch networks becomes more complex due to their unique specifications and
newlinelack of tamper resistant hardware Hence providing security against node
newlinecompromise attacks becomes an essential element for the success of sensor
newlinenetwork applications especially in unattended hostile environments Security
newlinemechanisms are more resource demanding in terms of computational or
newlinecommunication complexity due to wireless and transient nature of
newlinecommunication relationships among the nodes in the network Thus novel
newlinemechanisms are required to provide sufficient levels of security while
newlinerespecting the constraints in the network
newlineIn the thesis certain investigations on security and node
newlinecompromise attacks in a distributed wireless sensor network are carried out A
newlinebasic security mechanism named MultiSEC is developed by combining the
newlinebenefits of both key management and compromised node detection to provide
newlinesecure access of data and control messages
