Cholelithiasis, responsible for approximately 98% of gallbladder diseases, has been significantly associated with dyspeptic symptoms such as flatulent discomfort, abdominal pain, and nausea. Despite cholecystectomy being the standard treatment for symptomatic gallstone disease, the persistence of gastrointestinal symptoms in a substantial proportion of patients post-surgery necessitates a deeper investigation into its efficacy. This prospective study was conducted at Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute to evaluate the correlation between gallstone-associated dyspepsia and outcomes following cholecystectomy. newline newlineThe study involved 25 patients diagnosed with cholelithiasis and presenting with dyspeptic symptoms, all undergoing either laparoscopic or open cholecystectomy. Inclusion criteria mandated preoperative and postoperative esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) assessments to document gastrointestinal abnormalities and their resolution or persistence post-surgery. Key outcomes, including symptom relief, were analyzed in relation to patient demographics, addiction histories, and endoscopic findings. newline newlineResults revealed a female predominance (64%) with the majority of patients aged 31 50 years. The prevalence of chronic calculus cholecystitis (68%) outweighed acute presentations (32%), and most patients had normal preoperative EGD findings (84%). Postoperative evaluations indicated symptom relief in 80% of cases concerning abdominal pain, while 68% of dyspeptic symptoms were alleviated. Notably, 28% of patients exhibited gastritis postoperatively, underscoring the potential development of bile reflux gastritis as a postoperative complication. newline newlineFactors such as smoking and alcohol consumption correlated with diminished symptom resolution, emphasizing the influence of lifestyle on surgical outcomes. Advanced age and preoperative gastritis were significant predictors of persistent symptoms, necessitating tailored patient education regarding expected outcomes of surgery. newline newlineThis study highlights the complexity of symptom resolution following cholecystectomy, stressing the need for comprehensive preoperative assessments, including EGD, to optimize patient selection and postoperative management strategies. Further research with larger cohorts is warranted to delineate the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying persistent symptoms and refine therapeutic approaches for dyspepsia in cholelithiasis. newline
