Abstract
The scientometric study is a viable and relatively objective measure of a university and research institute s performance, particularly in science and technology. Universities and Research Institutes must assess the research performance of the researcher and scientist for promotion, allocation of research grants, awards, planning of human resource, to know the
newlinestrengths and weaknesses of the institutions and individuals and to use it in policy decision. Studies on the generation of scientific knowledge and to know its resultant impact is very crucial for the progress of science and technology.
newlineIndian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) was established in 1958. At present, it has 25 academic units, ~10,000 students, ~600 full-time faculty members and ~1500 staff members. It offers undergraduate, doctoral and other postgraduate programs in over 44 areas of engineering and technology, science, design, management, and humanities and social science. Over the last 58 years, ~50,000 students have graduated from the Institute. The objective of this research is to explore and develop the utility of scientometrics as a research assessment tool to gain insight into the important aspects of research activities at IITB and suggest a methodology for studying the quantitative performance and research impact of the research institute. This study will give a real insight into the research performance of the IITB since 1958.This study explores scientific publication output of IITB
