Abstract
Background:
newlineThere have been many studies on female urinary incontinence in India, on incidence,
newlineprevalence, risk factors and management, but one on the effect of PFME on degrees of
newlineseverity and quality of life among women.
newlineObjectives:
newlineMajor objectives of this study were to;
newline1) Assess the severity of urinary incontinence among women with stress urinary
newlineincontinence.
newline2) Assess quality of life of women with stress urinary incontinence before
newlineimplementation of Pelvic floor muscle exercises.
newline3) Evaluate the effectiveness of Pelvic floor muscle exercises on quality of life of
newlinewomen with stress urinary incontinence.
newlineDesign and settings:
newlineStudy was conducted using, Pre-experimental, One Group Pre-test Post-test design.
newlineMaterials and methods:
newlineSample were identified as per inclusion criteria for the study, Purposive sampling
newlineadopted explained about
newlinequestionnaire as data collection tool. Written informed consent obtained on agreement of
newlineparticipation in the study. Demonstration of pelvic floor muscle exercise was done.
newlineRedemonstrations of PFME taken in the same sitting. Women were informed to practice
newlinethese exercises four times in day for minimum 8-10 muscle contractions and relaxation
newlineeach time for a period of 4 weeks and maintain daily exercise diary sheet given to them
newlinefor this period. They were called for follow-up every week at the study setting to check
newlinetheir performance and technique of PFME. At the end of 4 week the daily exercise diary
newlinerecord was collected back to check compliance to intervention requirements and to
newlinedecide inclusion of sample data into final analysis or exclusion from it. Severity
newlinequestionnaire re-administered as a part of post-test and collected.
newlineResults:
newlinei. Majority (86.66%) study samples were in the age group of 25-50 years.
newlineii. (85%) of them were educated
newlineiii. (46.7%) were primipara with equal number with 2-3 children and 3.3had given
newlinebirth to 4, 5 children.
newlineiv. Age of delivery was below 18 years for (55%) samples and others up-to the age
newlineof 29 years.
newlinev. (81.67%) had FTND whereas, equal (5%) had
