Abstract
Periodontitis is a complex andchronic inflammatory disease of the tooth
newlinesupporting structures characterized by immune cell infiltration in to the gingival
newlinetissues that support teeth (periodontium) leading to connective tissue destruction,
newlineattachment loss and alveolar bone resorption and subsequent loss of teeth. The role
newlineof genetic factors in the pathogenesis of periodontitis is still in infancy. Therefore,
newlinethe present study has been designed to evaluate the role of genetics polymorphism in
newlineinflammatory genes in susceptibility of chronic periodontitis to look for allelic
newlinedifferences in the individuals having confirmed chronic periodontitis. For this a total
newlineof 200 chronic periodontitis (CP) patients were selected and a total of 200 healthy
newlinecontrols with mean age, sex and ethnicity matched with patients were enrolled.
newlineDental disease-free subjects those who came for regular check-up and free from any
newlineinflammatory disease were enrolled in the study as controls. UNC-15 probe was
newlineused to examine periodontal status. Plaque index, clinical attachment level, bleeding
newlineon probing, pocket depth gingival index, and calculus index were recorded as
newlineclinical parameters. Cases with clinical attachment loss (CAL) gt3 mm in more than
newline30% of sites were considered in CP group, whereas CALand#8804;3 mm in 90% of sites was
newlineobserved in controls. The cases and controls were excluded if they had presence of
newlineany immunosuppressive disease, systemic disease such as diabetes, hepatitis,
newlinebleeding disorders, and pregnant women/lactating mothers, or if subjects were
newlineundergoing treatment with anti-inflammatory or/ immunosuppressive drugs. We
newlineevaluated the role of genetic polymorphism in IL-1and#946;, IL-1RN, IL-6, TNF-and#945;, TLR-4
newlineand COX-2 genes on chronic periodontitis in northern India.
