Experimental investigation on treatment of tannery wastewater using sequential anaerobic aerobic biofilm based reactor

Abstract

newline An attempt was made to treat real tannery wastewater by using a lab-scale Sequential Anaerobic-Aerobic Biofilm (SAAB) based reactor. A detailed field investigation pertaining to operation and treatment process was undertaken along with several laboratory experiments. Apart from sample collection at the site and characterization of wastewater, the performance studies were undertaken in the laboratory at room temperature. The lab-scale SAAB reactor was appropriately designed and for the start-up of the reactor, the rumen liquid of goat and cow-dung slurry was used. The detailed physicochemical characteristics of inoculums mixture were undertaken. The overall performance of model SAAB reactor was assessed in a single reactor by varying the HRTs, OLRs and Aeration variations, through corresponding flow rates. The performance assessment parameters, such as COD removal, Alkalinity variation, TDS Variation, TSS variation at different level in the reactor were adapted. In addition, the overall gas production in the reactor was appropriately quantified during the entire experimental study. Biomass accumulations within the reactor and on the surfaces of packing material were assessed as part of the research work. newline newline newline
