dc.description.abstractPortable devices provide seamless connectivity and are the most efficient way to access information on demand. In recent years, due to constant developments in cutting-edge research related to connectivity, the evolution of these devices has significantly increased the data rate. The minimum data rate provided by the current devices is determined to be 400Mbps, and this rate is expected to reach 2Gbps by 2020. Services offered by portable devices are wide-ranging from traditional routers, cellular modems, and terminals, vehicles, distributed antenna systems for indoor and outdoor (such as airports and shopping malls). Multiple antenna systems in devices promise an enormous data rate. Devices embedded with multiple antennas in close proximity can lead to mutual coupling. Therefore, it is imminent to design a compact multiband/wideband MIMO antennas with improved isolation performance. The main objective of this thesis is designing a compact multiband and UWB MIMO antenna with improved isolation for closely placed antennas for portable devices. For miniaturizing the antenna size, all the presented designs utilize fractal shapes as the antenna s radiating element. Such antennas are compact and lightweight, which can fit them inside the sheathing of portable devices. These antennas are then studied for diversity performance using their radiation pattern. A case study is carried out to study the suitability of the designed antennas inside portable devices using EM solver xFDTD. Finally, Wireless Insite package is used to calculate their channel capacity for both indoor and outdoor environments. newline
