Effectiveness of Skill Training Programme on Management of Selected Paediatric Emergencies among Staff Nurses at Selected Hospital Puducherry

Abstract

Children are Gods greatest gift to humanity with immense potential and the potential to be the most productive resource for any nation. However many children suffer from specific Paediatric Emergencies such as Burns Drowning Home Accidental Injury Foreign Body Obstruction and Seizure. Nursing responsibility is to provide nursing intervention including Paediatric emergency first aid management. In India burns foreign body aspiration drowning and poisoning are the second leading causes of death among children aged 5 to 14. Death trends in older children and early adolescents follow the groups underlying risk profiles with a shift towards accidents and injuries particularly drowning and road traffic injuries for older children and young adolescents. Seizures are one of the most frequent neurologic disorders in children with the maximum prevalence occurring during the first year of life. Choking during eating or playing prolonged coughing or wheezing that does not respond to medical treatment may be the only symptoms. Burns are a common and devastating childhood injury that has a long term impact on a growing child with various consequences and a fatal prognosis.
