Self esteem family climate and peer pressure as predictors of career decision making among adolescents

Abstract

This study is intended to find out the relationship of self-esteem, family climate and peer pressure as predictors of career decision making among adolescents. 800 adolescents (from +1 class) studying in Government Senior Secondary Schools of Punjab were taken as sample. The results of the study showed significant positive and negative relationship between self esteem and career decidedness and indecision respectively. A significant positive relationship is found between career decidedness and family climate, whereas a significant negative relationship is found between career indecision and family climate. Another important finding indicates that the relationship between career decidedness/indecision and peer pressure is significant. Further the results also pinpointed the fact that self-esteem family esteem and peer pressure conjointly predict career decision making significantly higher as compared to their independent predictions for adolescents. This interactive effect was same for male as well as female adolescents. Thus the present research provides an outline to improve self-esteem in adolescents; provision of more conducive climate from family, involvement more and more in groups who motivates and inspire which can help in optimum psycho-social development of socially anxious adolescents. newline
