Abstract
The tannery industry is well known as a high consumer of water. It can
newlinecreate heavy pollution from effluents containing high levels of salinity, organic
newlineloading, inorganic matter, dissolved and suspended solids. The presence of residual
newlineimpurities such as chromium, COD, color, turbidity, organic material etc in tannery
newlineindustry effluent is aesthetically undesirable and causes problems for the aquatic
newlinebiosphere due to the reduction of sunlight penetration and depletion of the dissolved
newlineoxygen. Wastewater characterization is an important step in designing effective
newlinetreatment facilities for industrial wastewaters. This is especially true for tanneries
newlinewhich exhibit significant differences in their production processes generating
newlineeffluents of unique and complex nature
