newlineThe present study examined the influence of Rhododendron arboreum flower extract RAFE, Rhododendron arboreum leaves extract RALE, Fumaria parviflora extract FPE, and Stephania glabra extract SGE on memory impairment induced by intracerebral administration of colchicine, 3 microgram in 10 micro litre in mice. The extracts were administered at doses of 100 and 200 mg per kg orally daily for a period of 25 days starting from 4 days before colchicine administration. Colchicine induced impairment was assessed by locomotor activity, Morris water maze test and passive avoidance test followed by estimation of oxidative stress, cholinergic function and nitrative stress parameters. Extracts also investigated for In vitro antioxidant activity, free radical scavenging, reducing power, metal chelating ability, beta carotene bleaching power and protection against lipid peroxidation. Colchicine, a microtubule disrupting agent when administered intra cerebroventricularly in mice resulted in poor memory retention in both Morris water maze, passive avoidance task paradigms and caused marked oxidative stress as indicated by significant increase in malondialdehyde, nitrite levels, depletion of Superoxide dismutase, catalase, reduced glutathione level. It also caused a significant decrease in Choline acetyltransferase activity. Chronic administration of RAFE, RALE, FPE and Stephania glabra extract SGE,100 and 200 mg per kg, per oral for a period of 25 days, starting 4 days prior to colchicine administration resulted in an improvement in memory retention, attenuation of oxidative damage and restoration of acetylcholinesterase activity. RALE, RAFE, FPE and SGE extract showed good free radical scavenging, reducing power, metal chelating ability, beta carotene bleaching power and protection against lipid peroxidation. Present study demonstrates the neuroprotective effect of Rhododendron arboreum, Fumaria parviflora and Stephania glabra extract against colchicine induced cognitive impairment and oxidative damage in mice and also
