dc.description.abstractWith the proliferation of vehicular technology, modern vehicles are newlinefortified with ever more electronic maneuvers. This advancement ratifies the newlineevolution of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)to provide services like newlineshared travel, smart driving, on-the-go Internet, etc. As a traditional newlineapplication of ITS, a Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) enables smart newlinecommunication between vehicle nodes and network infrastructures to provide newlinevarious expedient services such as road safety, data sharing, traffic newlinemanagement, parking assistance, entertainment, route recommendation, newlinemobile payment, and even cloud applications. The high-speed mobile nodes newline(vehicles) in VANET perform very differently from other wireless newlinecommunication networks and have a set of distinct features such as frequent newlinelink disconnection, highly dynamic topology, limited coverage area, and newlineheterogeneous system architecture that may affect the performance and newlineservice quality of the VANET significantly.Due to ad hoc and the broadcast nature of underlying vehicular network architecture, smart vehicles are susceptible to cyberattacks. When a newlinevehicular network encounters a cyberattack, the malevolent node camouflages newlineas a primary member to disseminate unreliable road information, disrupt the newlineavailability of the communication link, or illegally steal information of the newlinenetwork. Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is an efficient way to alleviate the newlinecyberattacks in VANETs by identifying anomalous network activities. The newlinemajor issue in existing IDSs is the broadcast storm problem. In this problem, newlinethe vehicle nodes disseminate unnecessary/redundant messages to all other newlinenodes which impose higher transmission latency and reduce the system newlinethroughput. Consequently, these issues may unswervingly degrade the newlineeffectiveness of IDSs. To cope with this problem and reduce the complexity newlineof inter-vehicle communication, one possible solution is to virtuallygroup newlinenodes into clusters based on common features such as position, velocity, newlinemoving direction of the vehicle, etc newline
