Abstract
Scarcity of water is found in major parts of the world which must be
newlineovercome for the betterment of the society Life without pure water is
newlineimpossible because of its need in each and every activity of the society At the
newlinesame time major water bodies are getting polluted which reduces the
newlineavailability of pure water Also the major water sources are too salty that they
newlinecannot be used for drinking purposes Desalinating the saline water and
newlinepollutant removal may reduce water scarcity Conventional desalination
newlinetechniques possess many disadvantages hence utilization of solar energy for
newlinepurification is the right choice
newlineIn South India Kovilpatti where the research was carried out has
newlinebore wells which are heavily loaded with salt They exceed the limit for
newlinedrinking This work concentrates on constructing economically feasible solar
newlinestills Two single and double basin double slope steel and glass solar stills
newlinewere made with 063m2 and 081m2 basin area and two single basin single
newlineslope steel still with 025m2 basin area were also fabricated
