Study and Investigation on Error Resilient Wireless Image Transmission Using Packetization and Channel Coding

Abstract

newline Image transmission and retrieval has been a very demanding feature in recent wireless newlinemultimedia communications. However, representing multimedia data requires a large amount newlineof information, leading to high bandwidth requirement and delay in transmission. With the newlineadvent of high-capacity storage devices, powerful and yet economical computer workstations newlineand high speed PSTN, ISDN networks, providing a variety of multimedia communication newlineservices is becoming not only technically, but also economically feasible. Multimedia newlinetransmission has several unique characteristics such as unequal importance, error tolerance and newlineerror propagation. newlineIn this research work, important communication aspects such as packetization, Unequal Error newlineProtection (UEP), channel coding have been investigated. The methodology involves coding newlineof an image into bitstreams by SPIHT coding, packetizing the bitstreams and applying suitable newlinechannel codes for error correction. The main QoS parameters considered for image newlinetransmission and retrieval are packet error rate and PSNR of the reconstructed image. newlineMultimedia systems incorporate continuous media like voice, video, and images. Images are newlineof two types: graphical images and digitized images. Both types are displayed in the form of newlinetwo-dimensional matrices of individual picture elements; representation is different in both newlinecases. In this research work, digital images from standard database, real time images and raw newlineimages are considered as input data. The common image file formats used in multimedia newlinecommunication are GIF and TIFF formats. newlineEfficient delivery of images and retrieval over wireless multimedia communication networks newlinerequires a balance between available bandwidth and quality of received data. To design errorresilient newlineimage coding systems, it is necessary to understand some of the basic and most newlinecommon techniques used for compression, coding, packetization and as well as current newlineapproaches for transmitting images over wireless channels.
