Abstract
A journal bearing is a machine element which supports another moving machine element
newlineknown as a journal. One of the basic purposes of a bearing is to provide a frictionless
newlineenvironment to support and guide a rotating shaft. A good bearing material should be heat
newlineresistant, corrosion resistant. In order to reduce the frictional and wear resistance, and to carry
newlineaway the heat generated, a layer of fluid which is known as a lubricant has to supply through
newlinethe porous layer of the journal bearing. Readily availability, cheaper in cost, self-lubricating
newlinein nature, less maintenance requirement, even pressure generation, better damping
newlinecharacteristics etc. are the advantages in using a porous pad in a journal bearing which results
newlinein better performance of the journal bearing. On the basis of Eringen s micropolar fluid
newlinetheory, a theoretical analysis of hydrodynamic film behaviour for short partial porous journal
newlinebearings lubricated by micropolar fluids is presented in this report.
