Experimental investigation and optimization of process parameters for high velocity oxygen fuel coating of carbide based cermets

Abstract

newlineIn India more than 65 of electricity consumed is generated by thermal power plants of which about 85 of power generation is carried out using direct combustion pulverized coal method The coal coming from Indian mines have a large amount of ash content approximately 50 The ash contains abrasive mineral species like hard quartz which causes the erosion of boiler tubes The ash gets into the stream of flu gas leaving which collides with the boiler water wall tubes causing extensive surface damage through the phenomena called solid particle erosion The water wall tube erosion occurring at high temperature is the main cause of failure in the power plant The cost associated with the replacement of failed tubes in same installations are very high approximately 54 of the total production cost The resulting penalty is of stoppage of power production and replacing the components These demand the development of new erosion resistant protection systems for such applications for both engineering and economical perspectives Erosion problem can be arrested through number of preventive measures like design aspect chemical additive and cladding protective coatings Among the various preventive measures the application of a thin layer of erosion resistant coating is only one possible practical reliable economical and viable way to control or prevent the erosion problems of the boiler components
