dc.description.abstractThere are several barriers that prevent young people from growing and being well. The biggest of these problems is unemployment and the lack of possibilities for young people to find acceptable jobs. The major reason behind unemployment, especially youth unemployment, is usually poor educational achievement, since education generates skills, and skills are the prerequisites for getting employment. For this reason, youth unemployment doesn t only reveal the poor economic status of the young section of the population; it also reveals the systematically oppressed condition of the majority of the young population, which prevents them from achieving a better education. If the population of a society can be segregated into some groups by some way of grouping and the members of the disadvantaged groups are systematically lagged behind in terms of education due to poor educational opportunities, then the situation becomes cumbersome. Despite poor economic conditions, if the young members of the oppressed groups achieve education by exerting better efforts, even then they may fail to get employment due to discrimination against them in the labor market, or if this discrimination prevents them from getting a better position in the occupational hierarchy, then the situation becomes more complicated. Accordingly, it can be argued that the state of youth unemployment and the occupational status of the young population are two important indicators of the economic well-being of a nation, state, or region. newlineAgainst this backdrop, this study is an attempt to look into the state of youth employment and unemployment in the state of West Bengal, India. In the course of discussion, we first examine the educational achievement, probability of getting employment, types of employment, and occupational status of young individuals aged between 21 and 35 years in West Bengal.
