Understanding fashion a study of culture and identity

Abstract

Fashion plays a crucial role in society by significantly connecting individuals, communities, and cultures. It has existed throughout history and continues to influence how people express themselves, their identities, and their places in the world. No person in any society has lived without a culture or identity. These elements are essential for existence, and without them, it is difficult to create, sustain, or change one s life. Fashion, as a phenomenon, has always existed and plays an important role in connecting individuals, communities, and societies. The aim of the present study was to explore the complex relationship between fashion, culture, and identity. Throughout the research, it became clear that fashion sometimes aligns with traditional social norms, while at other times, it challenges or contradicts them. This duality makes it difficult to understand fashion through a single theoretical lens. The researcher believed that fashion is too fluid and ever-changing to be fully grasped by adhering to just one perspective. Instead, a more comprehensive understanding can be gained by examining fashion from multiple sociological viewpoints. This approach helps uncover the evolving nature of fashion, culture and identity, allowing for a richer exploration of how these elements shape and influence each other over time. Hence, the study looked at fashion from different sociological perspectives, including functionalist, conflict, feminist, symbolic interactionist and postmodernist views. Each of these theories, individually, might fail to provide a complete understanding of how fashion, culture, and identity are intertwined. However, taken together, they all offer unique but crucial insights into this phenomenon and its interlinkage with culture and identity. newline
