Bioremediation of sea food waste and concomitant production of chitin oligosaccharides having application as biotherapeutic agents

Abstract
A process was standardized for the bioremediation of seafood waste in solid-state using Paenibacillus sp. AD with concomitant production of value-added products. Under optimized conditions, more than 90% of the shrimp waste was degraded with the production of 58.5 mggand#8315;¹ of chitin oligosaccharides and 35.2 IUgand#8315;¹ of chitinase. The process was successfully scaled up for the bioremediation of 1000 g of waste. Evaluation of the bioactive properties of the chitin oligosaccharides showed that they are promising prebiotic agents and exhibit other properties such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer activities, thus making them potential therapeutic candidates. Structural-functional analysis of chitin oligosaccharides filled an important knowledge gap by deciphering how the degree of acetylation and polymerization affect their bioactive properties. Paenibacillus sp. AD was also able to degrade other types of wastes generated from fish, crab, prawn as well as mixed seafood, along with the production of value-added products.
