In the olden times books were kept under lock and key because these newlinewere considered to be the pride of Emperors. The simple reason behind it was newlinethat the knowledge should not flow to masses and to avoid awakening among newlinethem so that the autocratic set-up should continue to function smoothly. Only newlinefew reputed persons in the court of ruler had privilege to access these books. As newlinethe time changed, the concept of library also changed accordingly. Thus, newlinelibraries have been the temple of knowledge in various forms since the newlinebeginning of civilization. Librarians as custodian of documents have been newlineregarded as the main disseminators of information for scholarly activities. newlineHence, the role has been enacted well by the librarians over the years and newlinelibraries as the mainstay for all scholarly pursuits. Documents and information newlinewere made available on request by librarians and everyone accepted what they newlinegot with great satisfaction and humility. With the advent of democracy, the newlinemore stress was given to the use of books. newlineIn popular literature, the image of the library was that of a place newlinewhere books are stored. Baker (1994)1 wrote in the New Yorker that the newline function of a great library is to store obscure books . But the application of newlinenew technology in the libraries, the librarians have been espoused with the newlinemore challenging goals of providing information to their users and newlineeducating them to manipulate the complex information resources of the newline Information Age . They have now assumed the responsibility for newlineexpanded roles in this new world of blurred boundaries, if we are to newlinesucceed in this role, we must redefine the image of our profession, promote newlinean active role for libraries in higher education in general and technical newlineeducation in particular. The library is not a shrine for the worship of books. newlineIt is not a temple where literary incense must be burned or where one s newlinedevotion to the bound book is expressed in ritual.
