Design of an Information System Development Model for Software SMEs in India a Software Engineering Approach

Abstract

The objective of this thesis is to develop and validate the model of Information Systems (ISs) development in software developing Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). While there are standard methods for large sized organizations to develop ISs with long term efficiency, very few attempts have been made to take advantage of these proven methods by SMEs. Information systems (ISs) are the main source of information projected to ease and contribute to the organizational objectives and thus the flexibility and success of business operations. In turn, the effectiveness/success of information systems is attributed mainly to three factors i.e. Strategic planning of Information system; Information System development approach; and Information System Project management. Though Software engineering approach of Information system development has always been appreciated in theory, yet it is observed that there is enormous divergence in the approaches adopted by various categories of enterprises .o develop systems, due to time constraint and cost associated with them, especially in SMEs. The long term effectiveness and efficiency of Information Systems profoundly depend upon how IS development process has been carried out. Research concerning it is important to design a model that would evaluate the process of realization of best practices of IS development in software developing SMEs.
