Abstract
The present study aims at the sustainable development of water
newlinebodies by sampling and analysis of water quality of various lakes in and
newlinearound Chennai city. The experiment was carried out to check total
newlinephosphorus, chlorophyll and Secchi depth to calculate the Trophic State
newlineIndex (TSI) by collecting water samples during various seasons. The
newlineresults were used to classify the lakes according to TSI. Fifteen lakes were
newlineselected, and samples were collected during rainy, winter and summer
newlineseasons. Seasonal fluctuations in the parameters like Total phosphorus,
newlineSecchi depth, Chlorophyll-a were analysed. Based on the parameters CTSI
newline(Carlson s Trophic State Index) was calculated for each lake and
newlineaccordingly lakes were classified. The CTSI values in this study ranges
newlinebetween 39 and 84. Among the selected lakes many were classified as
newlineeutrophic and hyper eutrophic based on CTSI value. Lakes Chetpet and
newlinePorur are classified as oligotrophic and mesotrophic respectively. The
newlineseasonal fluctuations in the trophic state of lakes from oligotrophic to
newlinemesotrophic would be helpful for policy making and lake restoration
newlineprogrammes. Water quality of many lakes in Chennai is deteriorating due
newlineto fast urbanization and industrialization.

newlineThis study also aims to assess physico-Chemical characteristics of
newlineVelachery Lake for effective eco management of the lake. Water samples
newlinewere collected during the post monsoon season. The sampling and
newlineanalytical methodologies were followed for the estimation of selected
newlineparameters as per Standard methods of water and wastewater analysis
newline(APHA 2005). This study further investigates the growth of micro algae
newlineChlorella vulgaris in Velachery Lake water and the reduction of pollution
newlineat the end of growth phase. The biomass density, biomass productivity and
newlinethe lipid content were estimated as, 0.722±.028 g/l,.0589g/l/d, 21±.06 %
newlinerespectively. The results brought to light that polluted lake water as a costeffective
newlinegrowth medium can be utilised to augment biomass production,
