dc.description.abstractAbstract newlineBackground The Ethanolic Extract of Carica Papaya Seeds contains a myriad of bioactive compounds suggesting potential therapeutic applications. This research set out to investigate EECPS and its constituent isoliquiritigenin against gentamicin induced nephrotoxicity in Wistar albino rats in terms of their phytochemical composition acute toxicity antioxidant capability and nephroprotective effects. newlineMethods Qualitative phytochemical analysis of EECPS identified various bioactive compounds. Acute toxicity was assessed at 2000 mg per kg body weight in Wistar rats, observing physical behavioral and histopathological changes. The DPPH test was used to assess the antioxidant ability with the IC50 values of gallic acid and EECPS compared. Monitoring serum creatinine urea and blood urea nitrogen levels after gentamicin treatment in addition to histological analysis of kidney tissues, were used to ascertain nephroprotective effects. newlineResults EECPS exhibited a diverse phytochemical profile, including tannins flavonoids alkaloids phenols proteins saponins and glycosides. Acute toxicity assessment revealed no adverse effects, indicating its safety. Page 5 The DPPH assay demonstrated significant antioxidant activity of EECPS albeit less than that of gallic acid. EECPS and ISL significantly mitigated gentamicin induced elevations in nephrotoxicity markers in a dose dependent means with ISL at 80 mg per kg showing the most profound nephroprotective effects. Histopathological analyses corroborated these findings showing reduced renal damage in treated groups. newlineConclusion The antioxidant and nephroprotective properties of EECPS and ISL are brought to light in this work which emphasizes their therapeutic potential. The safe profile and significant efficacy against gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity advocate for further exploration into their potential health benefits newline
