Abstract
An AC to AC converter is a combination of power electronic devices
newlinethat can convert fixed AC into variable AC according to the requirements and
newlinethe usage. The output voltage and frequency can be managed by AC to AC
newlineconverter. Cycloconverter is like a transformer that converts the AC voltage of
newlineone frequency to another. The single-stage power conversion done by matrix
newlineconverter is an alternative to cycloconverter. Variable voltages and
newlinefrequencies can be obtained from the matrix converter when the source has
newlinefixed voltage and frequency, and vice versa. The applications of matrix
newlineconverters can be broadly classified into wind energy conversion systems as
newlinewell as multiphase and multi-motor drive systems. This work mainly focuses
newlineon the application of matrix converters in the field of the multi-phase drive
newlinesystem. Three-phase in and k-phase out matrix converter can feed the required
newlinepower to the multiphase drive system from a fixed frequency and fixed voltage
newlinethree-phase voltage source. The advantages of multiphase drive systems over traditional threephase drive systems include a higher degree of freedom in control, lower perleg
newlinepower rating, higher system stability, higher fault tolerance properties,
newlinehigher redundant structure, reduced volume of machines, reduced dc-link
newlinecurrent harmonics and less current losses, reduced rotor harmonics, reduced
newlinepulsating torque amplitude, and high frequency pulsating torque production.
newlineThe applications of multiphase matrix converter are aircraft applications,
newlinedefense, hospitals, ship propulsion, traction drive, naval ship, and hybrid
newlineelectric vehicle applications
