Abstract
Metal Matrix Composites MMCs are advanced materials
newlinepossessing several characteristics that make them useful in situations where
newlinelow weight high strength high stiffness and an ability to operate at elevated
newlinetemperatures are required Among modern composite materials particularly
newlinediscontinuous reinforced materials such as aluminium matrix composites
newlinereinforced by SiC particles have become practical engineering materials due
newlineto their superior performance viz high mechanical properties wear
newlineresistance low coefficient of thermal expansion excellent thermal
newlineconductivity and nonflammability However because of the existence of
newlinehard SiC reinforcements in their structure they are difficult to machine
newlineWhile machining AlSiC composites using conventional methods the
newlinepresence of hard SiC particles causes problems like cracking and splintering
newlinemaking it necessary for finishing processes such as grinding
