Abstract
Due to their versatile applications, plant derived substances are gaining great interest and
newlinethere has been an increased focus on plant research all over the world. Also traditional plant
newlinederived drugs promise safety as compared to the synthetic ones that are considered as
newlinedangerous to human and environment.
newlineThe present research work aimed to evaluate the phytochemical and pharmacological profile
newlineof ethanolic extracts of stem bark of Alstonia scholaris and seeds of Caesalpinia crista.
newlinePreliminary phytochemical screening of the ethanolic extracts was performed through various
newlinechemical tests to identify the bioactive phytoconstituents like flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins,
newlinesaponins, phenolics, triterpenoids, carbohydrates, etc. TLC also revealed the presence of
newlinevarious phytoconstituents in the prepared extracts. Various secondary bioactive metabolites
newlinelike phenolics and flavonoids were also estimated quantitatively.
newlineFive compounds were isolated by subjecting the ethanolic extract of selected plant materials
newlineto column chromatography technique. All the isolated compounds were characterized through
newlineIR, mass and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy.
newlineThe pharmacological evaluation comprised of assessing antioxidant and hepatoprotective
newlineefficacy of ethanolic extract of stem bark of Alstonia scholaris and seeds of Caesalpinia
newlinecrista.
newlineThe in vitro antioxidant potential was assessed by DPPH free radical scavenging method. The
newlinein vivo hepatoprotective activity was evaluated against carbon tetrachloride induced
newlinehepatotoxicity in Wistar rats. In both the cases, i.e. antioxidant and hepatoprotective
newlineactivities, the ethanolic extract of stem bark of Alstonia scholaris (EEAS) and seeds of
newlineCaesalpinia crista (EECC) were found active. The research affirms a future study involving
newlinethe isolated compounds for screening their detail biological activity so that they can be used
newlineas new therapeutic moiety or as lead compounds for future research.
