A smart grid is a combination of traditional and advanced control, monitoring for improvement of reliability, efficiency, and quality of supply. Therefore, future smart grids will provide intelligent solutions to power system operators like optimal placement and sizing of grid components. Feeder reconfiguration and Distributed Generation (DG) can be used to improve the distribution system performance. Feeder reconfiguration is performed by changing the open/close status of two types of switches: normally open tie switches and normally closed sectionalizing switches. Its main purpose was for restoration via other route to improve reliability, sometimes for load balancing by relieving overloads. Feeder reconfiguration is very good alternative to reduce power losses and improve voltage profile to improve overall performance, with almost no cost. DGs have various technical benefits such as voltage profile improvement, relief in feeder loading, power loss minimization, stability improvement, and voltage deviation mitigation. DGs cannot be placed randomly to achieve benefits. Therefore, it is essential to investigate and determine the optimum location and size of the DG for incorporate in distribution system to boost the network performance. newlineThis thesis investigates the distribution system operations and aims to propose new techniques for power loss minimization and voltage profile improvement. The objective of this study is to develop new techniques for solving the distribution network reconfiguration problem, the distributed generation placement problem and the integration of both the methods. The optimization algorithms used in this thesis are Discrete- Binary PSO, Jaya, and TLBO. This research aims to develop algorithms to solve the distribution system reconfiguration and optimal DG placement and sizing problems. The simulations are carried out at various loading conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is demonstrated on the IEEE 16 bus, 33 bus, and 69 bus systems. The simulated results are encouraging a
