Certain investigations on security schemes for detection and isolation of malicious nodes in mobile Ad Hoc networks

Abstract

A Mobile Ad Hoc Network is a collection of dynamic independent wireless devices that forms a communication network devoid of any backing of a permanent infrastructure MANET is suited to many applications both in civilian environments such as disaster relief and spontaneous conference and in military environments such as battlefield newlinedeployments and sensor networks The wireless nature and the inherent features of MANET make them vulnerable to a wide variety of attacks The attacks on MANET can be classified as passive and active attacks A passive attack intrudes the data exchange within the network without modifying it An active attack strives to alter or damage the data being exchanged in the network thereby halting the normal functioning of the network Based on the domain of attacks the attacks are further classified as external attack and internal attack In external attack the attacker aims to cause jamming or blockage propagate fake routing information or disturb nodes from providing services In internal attack the attacker gains the normal access to the network and takes part in the network activities either by some malicious impersonation to get access to the network as a new node or by directly compromising a current node and using it as a basis to conduct its malicious behaviour newline newline
