Abstract
The Indian computer sector was completely liberalised in 2005 by reducing the
newlinetariff rate to zero as per the Information Technology Agreement (ITA). To
newlinepromote the widespread use of Information technology, WTO has given utmost
newlineimportance towards the trade liberalisation by manifesting the ITA to distribute
newlinethe gains from trade of Information technology product and penetrate the
newlinecompetition of the industry throughout the world. An economic assessment of the
newlineIndian computer industry is relevant in this present context because the
newlineimplementation of ITA was completed for more than a decade. Consequently,
newlinewhether the industry has benefited or not, in this post liberalisation era (especially
newlinein the post ITA) is being studied in this thesis. Reduction in tariff or tariff
newlinerationalization falls under the globalization or external liberalisation policy of a
newlinenation. The nature of competitiveness, way of conducts and performance
newlineparameters such as productivity, efficiency and employment strategy of a
newlinedomestic industry is affected by modifications in the industry specific tariff
newlinepolicy. This is because the domestic industry faces higher degree of competition
newlinein the context of reduction in nominal tariff due to liberalisation policy
