newlineABSTRACT
newlineThe purpose of the study is to understand how scouting and guiding programs are
newlinehelping to develop social leadership competence among secondary school children and
newlineto develop a questionnaire that measures socially responsible leadership skills. A
newlinestratified random sampling technique was adopted to study 643 secondary school
newlinestudents involved in scouting and guiding programs of various types of school
newlinemanagement like government, private aided, and private schools from the metro and
newlinenon-metro Bangalore Education Division. There has been growing concern over
newlinedeveloping social leadership competence among young minds which is the need of the
newlinehour for the community and there is a need for empowering them through non-formal
newlineeducation. Social leadership competence can be developed through scouting and
newlineguiding programs which refer to pedagogies that create enriching learning experiences
newlinefor students and address related character formation. Many schools have initiated the
newlinescouts and guides program and it s an international movement in India the programs
newlineare organized and executed by The Bharat Scouts and Guides , India.
newlineThis study presents a framework for understanding leadership skills and social
newlineleadership competence based on the previous review of the literature. The present
newlineresearch reveals a new perspective on understating social leadership in terms of
newlinedeveloping Socially Responsible Leaders at the secondary school level. The SRL
newlineincludes group, individual, and society/community values. Socially Responsible
newlineLeadership includes three practices: Group Values - Collaboration, Common Purpose,
newlinecontroversy with civility, Individual Values - Consciousness of Self, Congruence and
newlineCommitment, and Society / Community Values Citizenship according to the Social
newlineChange Model. The reliability and validity of Socially Responsible Leadership (SRL)
newlinefor secondary school children who are actively involved in scouting and guiding
newlineprograms are also discussed. The finding of the study indicates that scouting and
newlineguiding programs influence secondary school children to develop leadership skills and
newlineSocially Responsible Leadership competence irrespective of the difference between
newlineschool management and the board of education affiliated in Bangalore. There are no
newlinesignificant differences in the scout s and guide s social leadership competence in
newlinesecondary schools in Bangalore.
