Impact of Scouting and Guiding Programs on Developing Ledership Skills and Social Competence Among Secondary School Students

newline vii newlineABSTRACT newlineThe purpose of the study is to understand how scouting and guiding programs are newlinehelping to develop social leadership competence among secondary school children and newlineto develop a questionnaire that measures socially responsible leadership skills. A newlinestratified random sampling technique was adopted to study 643 secondary school newlinestudents involved in scouting and guiding programs of various types of school newlinemanagement like government, private aided, and private schools from the metro and newlinenon-metro Bangalore Education Division. There has been growing concern over newlinedeveloping social leadership competence among young minds which is the need of the newlinehour for the community and there is a need for empowering them through non-formal newlineeducation. Social leadership competence can be developed through scouting and newlineguiding programs which refer to pedagogies that create enriching learning experiences newlinefor students and address related character formation. Many schools have initiated the newlinescouts and guides program and it s an international movement in India the programs newlineare organized and executed by The Bharat Scouts and Guides , India. newlineThis study presents a framework for understanding leadership skills and social newlineleadership competence based on the previous review of the literature. The present newlineresearch reveals a new perspective on understating social leadership in terms of newlinedeveloping Socially Responsible Leaders at the secondary school level. The SRL newlineincludes group, individual, and society/community values. Socially Responsible newlineLeadership includes three practices: Group Values - Collaboration, Common Purpose, newlinecontroversy with civility, Individual Values - Consciousness of Self, Congruence and newlineCommitment, and Society / Community Values Citizenship according to the Social newlineChange Model. The reliability and validity of Socially Responsible Leadership (SRL) newlinefor secondary school children who are actively involved in scouting and guiding newlineprograms are also discussed. The finding of the study indicates that scouting and newlineguiding programs influence secondary school children to develop leadership skills and newlineSocially Responsible Leadership competence irrespective of the difference between newlineschool management and the board of education affiliated in Bangalore.
