Effective Architecture for Design and Implementation AMR in Software Defined Radio

Abstract

Automatic Modulation Recognition (AMR) is a technology that has evolved from the newlineCommunication Intelligence (COMINT) related to military arena. COMINT supports newlineElectronic Warfare (EW), involving three wings namely Electronic Attack (EA), Electronic newlineSupport (ES) and Electronic Protection (EP) Systems. EA serves the purpose of identifying the newlineadversary signal, further jamming it or tampering it. ES is for continually monitoring any newlinespectral activity, decoding adversary signal and EP protecting the intended communications. newlineSpectrum Analysis and AMR have a major role in these tasks. With the advent of 4G/5G newlinedevices, where a single device can support more than one communication standards, AMR is newlinesuccessfully percolating its way in commercial devices as well. newlineThe communication plane has changed from Hardware Radio (HR) to Software newlineDefined Radio (SDR) and is convergent towards Cognitive Radio (CR). Hence, the same newlinedevice is capable to switch between standards with minimum or no human intervention. Most newlineof the communication modules such as decimation/interpolation, generation of Intermediate newlineFrequency (IF), filtering, modulation/demodulation are soft components/ reconfigurable newlinecomponents in SDR and CR. The trends in communication are demanding dynamic newlineadaptability switching with respect to signal strength, Quality of Service (QoS), newlinebandwidth/data rate and therefore different modulations. If the same information about newlineswitching and configuration must be conveyed to receiver; additional control frame or bits and newlinetherefore bandwidth must be sacrificed. To avoid this problem, AMR is included at the receiver newlineend in SDR platforms. newlineAMR tries to add the intelligence to the receiver, where the radio receiver will be newlinecapable to identify the modulation format of the intercepted signal without having any newlineadditional information from the receiver .Design and evaluation criteria for AMRs include newlinevarious parameters like accuracy of modulation recognition, computation complexity, decision newlinetime, number of frames/ sam
