Abstract

The travel for exploring Indian sub-continent is a very old trend because newlineforeigners did come to India in search of establishing trade relations and some newlinescholars came for the sake of attaining knowledge. In ancient India, foreigners had newlinebegun to study the whole continent and given distinguished names - India, Bharat, newlineIndo, Aryavarta, Hind, and Hindustan. Greek people had named this geography India. newlineThis name comes due to the wrong pronunciation of the river called Sindhu . The newlineterm Sindhu was difficult to pronounce by Persians and they articulated it as newline Hindu which regarded for people living across the river. Indo and Indus were two newlinenames by Greek and Roman identity given to this diverse country and certainly, the newlineterm India was derived from the river Indus . It is said that the Rigveda has a newlinedescription on several rivers along with Sindhu . This river had brought up Indus newlineValley civilization since the early human civilization or habitats were found at the newlinebanks of the river. The archaeological evidence of the major cities of the Indus Valley newlinecivilization are Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro dated back around 3000 years BC. In newlineancient time India was referred to the people of the Indus. Historical or mythical newlinenarratives introduced India as Bharatvarsha in the name of prominent character newlineemperor Bharat the son of Shakuntala and King Dushyant. The story was taken from newlineKalidasa s drama Abhigyan Shakuntalam. Bharatvarsha refers to the whole Indian newlinesub-continent. From the Himalaya to the Indian ocean in the South. Later the term newlineIndian was used for native people or inhabitants in this geography. And the native newlinename is India and people are called Indian just as natives of America are called as newlineIndians or Red Indian.
