Abstract
newline Human beings are exposed to natural radiation that is present outside and inside
newlinehouses. In India, the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre is working in this field. To
newlinemonitor natural radiation towards mankind, BARC allotted projects zone wise and
newlineupto Districts grid map towards different scientific and educational organisations. In
newlineearlier studies at Chhattisgarh, very few work reported the radionuclides and radon
newlinelevels from a few places of Chhattisgarh. However, no detailed study of the gamma
newlinedose rate is available for the districts of Chhattisgarh, especially for the Durg, Balod
newlineand Bemetara district areas. Hence, the present study aims to measure the gamma dose
newlineradiation rate from indoors and outdoors of three major districts of Chhattisgarh and
newlinecalculate the annual effective dose values to set the baseline data for the study areas.
newlineThe objective of the study is also to estimate the cancer risk from gamma radiation for
newlinethe Durg, Balod and Bemetara districts. This investigation involved the study of the
newlineimpact of season on the outdoor gamma dose radiation and the impact of
newlinemeteorological parameters.
newlineIndoor and outdoor gamma radiation dose rates are determined by using the Polimaster
newlinePM-1405 device, which is based on the Geiger-Muller technique. This device
newlinedetermined both terrestrial and cosmic radiation. Altitude values of areas are used for
newlinedetermination of cosmic radiation. Terrestrial radiation determined by subtracting the
newlinecosmic rays from measured values of gamma dose rate. Total 154 grid map (6×6 km2)
newlinepopulated areas of the Balod, Durg and Bemetara districts were selected for the
newlinemeasurement of indoor and outdoor gamma dose radiation rates. The latitude (N) and
newlinelongitude (E) of all study locations are determined by using the GPS coordination
newlinedevice model GARMIN OREGON 650. Annual effective dose values are calculated
newlinefrom measured values of OGDR and IGDR, and then LED values are calculated for
newlineinfants, children and adults. Cancer risk was calculated for those areas where the
