Evaluation of Interproximal Contact Areas As A Risk Factor For Caries in Children

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the variations in contact types of primary molars and to assess their association with a newlineproximal caries After three years of observation In Phase I a cross sectional study was designed with 74 contacts from newline28 existing CBCT images of children aged between 3 and 14 years The shape of contact area between the primary newline molars was observed In Phase 2 a sample of 4 point 476 contact areas of 1 point 119 caries free preschool children newlinewere included The contacts were scored as O open X point I straight and S curved using OXIS classification newlineThe prevalence was expressed in form of numbers and percentages In Phase 3 two dentists measured dental caries newlineat one year intervals for three years 2018 2021 for all the recruited children Poisson regression analysis with newline a multilevel approach was used to determine the association between contact type and approximal caries newlinePresence of four types of contact areas namely O X I and S type were observed The order of prevalence newline was I 75 point 5 per cent greater or not S 15 point 3 percent greater than O 5 point 8 percent greater than newlineX 3 point 3 percent The adjusted analysis revealed a significant association between contact type and approximal newlinecaries p less than and less than 0 point 05 The risk ratios for the development of approximal caries were 2 point 3 newlinefor X type contacts 12 point 7 for I type and 22 point 5 for Stype when compared with O type Contact types of newlineprimary molars are of four types O point X I and S Compelling evidence suggests that variations in contacts are a newlinesignificant risk factor for a proximal caries newline. newline newline newline
