Synthesis of nano hydroxyapatite and its polymer composites for drug delivery and tissue engineering applications

Abstract

The regulated formation of crystals in living systems is called biomineralization. It is essential for the proper functioning of hard parts of living beings such as bone, teeth, seashells etc. A biomaterial is any material, natural or synthetic used to replace a part of living systems or to enhance contact with tissues and body fluids. The present investigation aims to synthesis nano rods of pure and lanthanum doped HAp and it s effect on sintering. It further aims to investigate the fabrication of freeze dried degradable polymer HAp/ composite. Further, mineralization of nano HAp in the polyacrylamide gel matrix by varying pH and concentration at physiological pH and temperature (37 ºC). In addition it deals with the influence of inorganic metal ions (Ag, Zn and Fe) on the mineralization of HAp in polyacrylamide gel matrix. Nanorods of pure and lanthanum (0.01-0.05 M) doped HAp was synthesized by sol-gel method. In addition, the effect of sintering on pure and lanthanum doped HAp (0.05 M) samples was also discussed. The in vitro bioactivity test of the samples was performed in simulated body fluid (SBF) and dissolution studies were carried out in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) with pH 7.4. The drug release, haemolysis and antibacterial activity of the samples were also examined. The effect of silver, zinc and iron (0.01, 0.05 and 0.1 M) on the mineralization of HAp in polyacrylamide gel matrix at physiological pH 7.4 and temperature 37 and#1048795;C was also discussed. The samples were characterized using XRD, FTIR and SEM. XRD results confirmed the presence of pure HAp at Fe doped HAp (0.1M). The swelling ratio and in vitro drug release was carried out in PBS. The antibacterial activity of the samples was presented.
